AniTAY Drop (May 10, '13) Weekly Round-Up Of All Things Anime on TAY

It seems life caught up with us AniTAY-ers since TAY has been light on anime content for the past two weeks. Because of this, I decided to revisit a past articles and give it to you in a form a bit easier to digest. I rounded up the results of the Top 5 animes post for all you people who need some shows to watch :)

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

This show is full of heart. I usually cringe whenever anime shows rely on the "power of love" and the melodramatic-ness of its characters to advance the plot but this show makes me smile whenever it does that. It is aware of its own ridiculousness and over the top nature. It has mechas (though they act more like giant monsters) that are full of character to match their equally unique and fun cast. It may seem a bit childish at first *coughYokocough* but the plot certainly thickens. At the least, try to watch until episode 7. This is a very bittersweet anime that definitely drilled a unique hole in my heart. With a sincere plot, great characters, ear shattering-ly awesome soundtrack and eye melting visuals, this show comes with a heavy recommendation.

Code Geass (Season 1 and 2)

I was prepared to hate this show. My high school classmates loved this so much that I thought I'd hate it just 'cause. I didn't. I kind of hated Suzaku though. This show is almost like an antithesis to Gurren Lagann. While Gurren Lagann will just about power through every combat through will power, Code Geass sweats its brows over the difference between strategy and tactics. This focus on making controlled battles creates interesting fight scenes that are easy to follow and very fun to watch due to their chess-like nature where you're always trying to guess what's going to happen.

The show mainly focuses on the political side of things (the conflict between Japan Rebels and Britannia) but it also has supernatural stuff (the titular Geass) and even a few school moments. It even has man-tears worthy drama moments! Overall, the pacing of the show is great. The second season's pacing, in particular, is brutal. It will chuck so much awesome stuff at your face that when things do calm down it's a bit of a relief. It won't last long though since you'll go back looking for the great fights scenes and Lelouch's awesome evil laugh.

From the perspective of a huge Evangelion fan, Code Geass also shares some parallels with Evangelion. Pointing any out would be spoiler-ish though so just look out for them.

Code Geass is an easy recommendation for its great mecha scenes, great characters (seriously, by the end of the show you probably love at least one of the characters) and well-executed plot. It may not be the best of the best but it certainly is worth a watch.

HenNeko

This show definitely continues to improve. The recent episodes were definitely good and worthy of quite a number of laughs. The art remains very sweet and sugary but still good. The two main female characters are still likable despite a bit of a shift in their attitudes. I didn't think that the plot would move this fast though. It's a good thing though since it shows that the show won't rely on the "forced to be perverted" gimmick to deliver laughs (though a lot of the funny moments are still due to the MC's pervertedness). Definitely a good comedy show. This is something to watch in-between all those heavy anime stuff (watching Evangelion and Serial Experiments Lain back-to-back might kill your brain).

Aku no Hana

Aku no Hana. The internet's current favorite anime to shit on. It's definitely come a long way from the quite boring first episode. It definitely ramped up the creepiness factor. Not only that, even the art seems better (or it might just be my eyes getting used to it). This is actually the show that I most look forward to every week. If you're tired of all the cutesy stuff, watch this. At least watch until the second episode before you drop it. The plot is currently moving at a nice pace and it really is interesting to see where this will end up. I for one think that it will redeem itself from its pilot with the rest of its episodes.

OreImo 2

Dude, it's OreImo. It's awesome. Recent episodes ramped up not just the Kyou-Kirino relationship but also the Kyou-Kuroneko relationship. It looks like we'll be back to focusing on Kirino's problems again (which I hope means more Kirino playing eroge scenes!). The current situations are really interesting. And they're not just interesting, they're damn fun too. I just find myself smiling throughout the episodes. Feel good anime, that's what this is for me. (Yeah, I might have twisted the meaning of feel good a bit but...it does make me feel good/happy!)

Hataraku Maou-sama!

As much as I love OreImo, it just might be surpassed by another comedy show this season. That show is Hataraku Maou-sama. The recent episodes increased focus on the Maou-Emilia dynamic and it's darn fun to watch. Along with a new conflict, the show has taken an interesting turn that I wasn't really expecting. This show is just laugh-out-loud good. Watch it! I've got quite a few people hooked on it (including my dad who doesn't really watch anime).

Shingeki no Kyojin

I don't really need to repeat what the internet has been saying for a while now. This show is awesome. Every episode is just intense. If an episode isn't that intense then wait for the end of that episode since it'll totally set up an extremely awesome next episode. The show is still going along nicely and it's really shaping up to be quite a "classic".

TAY's Favorite Anime Shows
