Finally...After the crawl that was Caterpie and Metapod, you get the payoff! Generally speaking, 2nd stage evos (who are no longer the last of their evolutionary lines thanks to the Mega Evolutions introduced in X/Y) are generally more complex in nature in appearance and therefore gives me an opportunity to get really creative.
Ash's first pokemon was a Caterpie, whom we saw withstand the difficult phase of being a Metapod and then emerging as a beautiful Butterfree. I was really upset as a kid when he let him go and do his thang, but Butterfree had himself a a PYT so what else is a Butterfree supposed to but holla? Nahamean?
Anyway, I tackled the butterfly pokemon in a manner similar to how I drew up Blastoise. I drew up one half of Butterfree and my original rendition of this work was very straight forward and kept the original design intact. When I came back to finish the work, I was bored with what I had and decided to really change things up. As I mentioned in the Wartortle/Blastoise illustrations, I'm a fan of continuity for evolution. There's a theory that I'm pretty much for that Butterfree was a last minute change from evolving from Venonat to Metapod.
Venonant and Butterfree are nearly identical so I had to change it up here to fit Capterie and Metapod into the equation. I added Caterpie's eye ring to Butterfree's, and I made Butterfree's antenna carry the same color of Caterpie's antenna as well. To incorporate Caterpie and Metapod, I added green to the wings, which for me is one of my favorite parts of the illustration. I guess it is the focus, since the body is pretty much the same as before. I added purple and the turqouise bits of the limbs into the wings as well. Oh, and I brought back Caterpie's rings from his segmented body to the wings as well. And that's all for today! See you tomorrow!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the entire catalogue of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
