Bivalve Pokemon

Water/Ice Type

Supposedly every Snowflake that falls is unique from one another…Such is the case of my Cloyster illustration from his usual depiction for today's Pokemon One a Day! As the evolution of Shellder, Cloyster looks hardly anything like his counterparts when latched onto a Slowpoke. This evolution is a direct upgrade from the tiny little thing in a clam shell. The Pokemon is certainly more interesting to look at in comparison to Shellder, and to do something really different, I played up the ice typing it cohosts with its main water.

I actually had no idea the thing was an ice type, and once I found out, I thought of ways to incorporate that detail into the illustration. With Dewgong being the first ice type for the series, his design reflected the typing in its own way. Cloysters original protrusions and roundish shape lent the image of a flake to me right away. In lore, this Pokemon has near impentetrable defense, but shown with the makings of a snowflake it looks a bit fragile, no? But of course, that thought is not the focus. I got to go a little abstract with this one, and it was a fun trip trying to see what would work until I got to this end design.

With works like this, I design only half the form which is then duplicated and mirrored to fit on the other side to get a perfect fit. What this meant was that at the culmination of every session, I made a whole image to see what changes I would need to make the whole image look right. If you notice its shape, it's more egg-like than round, like most snow flakes are depicted. This is because Cloyster is more oval shaped to begin with, and going too round wound take away already more than I sacrificed from its original design to go in this route.

As for color, I knew I would stay around purple, but messed around with a gradient from an icy blue to purple. This was done for several reasons - to pay homage to the water and ice typing, as well as the alternate shiny color variation it has. I already just finished 3 purple colored Pokemon, and the following 3 are primarily purple too. In the long run of things, having this one less purple will break the streak for the better!

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the direction I took for this piece; I could hardly imagine anyone expected this to turn out this way. Either way, I'm happy with the result and hope to create more abstract work soon. With ghost types…Perhaps that will be possible! We'll see what happens. Thanks as always for checking out my work! See you tomorrow.

Yours,

Bonny

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
