Conception II demo impressions

Hey everybody! It's been a while, hasn't it? I've been a busy busy Sylver, and I haven't really been around much :( But, I'm going to try and get in a little more TAYtime, because I miss everybody! Anyway, on to the impressions. First off though, I must say that I'm extremely hyped for this game. I generally love Atlus and the Persona 4 Golden is probably among my top 5 RPGs of all time. That being said... The dub in this game is horrendous. When you're just reading the text, if you watch anime you can kind of get the vibe that the character is supposed to be portraying, but the tone of the VAs just don't seem to match up that well. I find this really odd because the english dub for Persona 4 Golden was pretty top notch. (I really don't like dubs, to be fair). I'm super hoping that they include a Japanese audio track as DLC or something.

This is all really a shame too, because the combat of the game so far has been a joy, and really unique too, it's all positional based, but in a circular way, rather than a grid-based combat system. It's hard to explain in writing, but it has a very deep system based on maximizing the efficiency of your attacks.

The plot so far, has had a few groan worthy moments, and I can already see a large overwrought trope based plot element coming, but at the same time it treads some familiar anime ground in a way that almost makes the plot like a comfort food, something safe for anime fans that doesn't push outside of expected boundaries and just is enjoyable enough to keep the grindfest going.

The fanservice element is pushed to the forefront every chance they can get however, which makes it a little bit awkward at times, plus "class-mating" ? c'mon guys you can do better than that. The characters so far are designed well, and none of them start to blend together which is nice. I guess when you have seven heroines in your game, you better make sure none of them are alike!

I need more time with it to be sure, but after an hour or two, I like the combat, the plot is standard (but nice), and the PLOT is just a little awkward. The BIG problem for me is going to be getting over the voice acting, hopefully it gets better as the game goes, but I'm not optimistic. All in all I think it's going to be a good game, with a few flaws. It's not going to win any game of the year awards, but it's a nice niche JRPG added to the growing collection of JRPGs for the Vita/3ds. (I'm playing on Vita)
