Cytus

I was browsing the Google Play Store yesterday, when I saw the word Cytus. I always love interesting words. Usually means an interesting game. And then there was a picture of a cyborg-looking girl. That's all it took. I downloaded it, without even knowing what it was.

I'm in love.

Cytus turned out to be a music game in the vein of Theatrhythm, which is one of my favorite games. Probably my favorite 3DS game, not including remakes. (That's for all the Zelda lovers out there, including me.)

It's the basic tap, hold, slide music game. The gameplay is really easy to pick up. The hardest thing for me to remember is to tap the actual notes. After playing Theatrhythm for so long, it's my default to just tap anywhere on the screen. Needless to say, I've been missing the first couple notes on each song. Also, the difficulty seems almost backwards. The first two songs are labeled easy, but aren't that easy. The third song, Chemical Star, is labelled hard, but should be where you start. It goes over the basics while being slow-paced.

What makes Cytus is what makes all other music games good or bad: the music. It's anime music. Well, not really. I don't believe any of it is in anime, but that's what it reminds me of. I can put each song into some of my favorite shows. My favorite so far is Ververge, which I think belongs in Ergo Proxy.

A playthrough of Ververge.

Now there are some hits and misses. Les Perfume de L'Amour is a miss for me. It feels like a wannabe Prohibition song, which is jarring amongst the others. It's not technically a bad song, but it doesn't quite fit. And then there is the last song of the chapter, Hot Air Balloon. It's like one of those songs on anime that the main characters sing for fun. It's so sweet and sugary, it's giving me cavities.

After looking up the videos for this, I discovered Cytus is also on the App Store. I can't recommend it enough.

I'm off to try Chapter 2 and 3 and 4 and how ever many there are.

I'll leave you with all the music from the first chapter to entice you to spend your lazy Sunday with this game.

And after you play for a bit, head to TAYClassic and see what's happening over there. I believe there is cyborg-looking girl or guy of your dreams over there. Or not. Go find out.
