​TAY: Open ForumS

For the past couple of weeks, I've been playing a lot of older shooters - some are kind of old, but others, like Rise of the Triad, got a remake/revision so that it looks and feels better by today's standards. Rise of the Triad was what I was playing most recently, and as I was going through it, I couldn't help but notice that I was doing a lot of things that felt ... odd to do in an older shooter.

For starters, I could use ADS (aim down sight) to target people easier. Basically, the game lets the player zoom in with the right click, but it puts a big ol' pair of iron sights right in front of the camera so it "looks better." Since I play TF2 a lot, I rarely use ADS, so it rarely came up. The one that really got me, though, was reloading. It took me over four levels in the game, which is roughly two hours since I'm slow, to realize that reloading does absolutely nothing. The only guns in the game that actually have ammo only have one clip, so they can't be reloaded anyway.

As far as I can tell, reloading does nothing. It's just the developer's way of poking fun at me for habitually doing it. And I never really stopped hitting R to reload between fights, despite me figuring this out.

That brings us to today's topic: evolution in games! Are there any new gameplay systems that you're happy are around now? Are there any older gameplay systems that you miss? Maybe you miss running around for healthpacks, or tilting the cartridge just a fraction of an inch when you hit play just to see the game freak out. Let us know!
