A Year of JRPG's

This year I made a single, fairly simple resolution: to play lots of JRPG's in 2014. My reason for this resolution is that I have had a growing interest in JRPG's over the past year, but I've never actually played any, other than Final Fantasy XIII. After reading plenty about FFXIII, I discovered that it probably wasn't the best introduction to the genre, given its rather mixed appeal.

My main goal for this year of JRPG's is to get a solid background in the genre, and to play some of the best experiences it has to offer. The only problem lies in the fact that the myriad selection of potential JRPG's I could play is daunting. I've already chosen a few games to play, which are, in no particular order (yet), Fire Emblem: Awakening, Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, and Final Fantasy Tactics. Hopefully this is a good selection of new and old JRPG's to get started with, but this is where I go to the reader for assistance.

I'd like to make this article a reference for both myself and any others who would like to jump into the JRPG genre. In the comments, list your favorite JRPG, why it would be good for a newbie to the genre, and what exactly makes it a unique experience overall. You can also tell me if my preliminary 4-game selections are a good idea. Feel free to suggest games for any platform. Once I get a few of the games under my belt, I'm planning writing about them from my obviously very inexperienced perspective, which will, if it goes as intended, provide deeper insight for anyone who has played or will play the specific JRPG.

Hopefully this can be a helpful article for anyone who gets the sudden urge to play a JRPG, but doesn't know where to start. Recommend away!
