Let's Look at Golbat! Pokemon One a Day!S

Same Day Update: Some slight changes really made a difference (at least to me). I added talon/digits to the tip of the wings and feet, added a bit of poison dripping down the top and bottom right tooth, widened out the right of the body giving the body a nice curve, filling in blue on the left side of the mouth to have the mouth look "contained" within the body, changed up the eyes for added cuteness and fitting of Golbat temperament (old ones were simple and kind of boring), made the ears more perkier, increased the size of the left wing and repositioned higher, and smoothed out the coloring on the body.

Poison/Flying

Today we have face sucker, aka Golbat! I mean...Wow, what a huge mouth! And what gives Nintendo? The original sprite of Golbat featured a super crazy Kiss styled tongue that is no longer seen as part of the design so I had to bring that back for this piece.

Now from the get go, I had no idea what kind of style to take this creature. I mean, I suppose that's always where I begin but at the very least I have some idea what direction I may want to take with a Pokemon. Golbat, not so much. All I knew is I wanted to feature his crazy tongue and exaggerate the mouth and teeth, both features which are clearly in the spotlight in this design.

My original draft of this piece explored the idea of turning Golbat into a proper bat. I mean look at what we have right now from Nintendo. Its a large rubbery body with eyes, sticks for feet and a ginormous void of darkness with teeth sticking out. My interpretation was to add fur to make it the mammal bats are, added two front teeth, the piggy-like nose they have, and large ears. I promptly removed all that when I found trouble trying to find a way to color in the outline I had.

It was very difficult and I went in a lot of directions. Nothing was working, until I decided to remove the outlines and played with very solid colors. As I stripped away my more mammalian take on Golbat, I began to start going in the route of "nightmare fuel" before deciding to twist that around with a 180. Let's make Golbat ridiculously cute, if that's even possible! So, the removing of outlines helped create a very gentle take for this new direction. I've done plenty of pieces in this project/series without outlines but they're usually fleshed out.

This time, I chose to go in a simple approach with colors and no outline and make it look more vector based, although it was painted out with a hard brush with some blending techniques. Simple white eyes, varying blues, cream colored teeth with green to cap off the dental work to symbolize poison and some nice pink for the wings...Not to mention the very visible gradation for the mouth.

The end result echoes the original Golbat design, in a very fun and playful tone, and more importantly features a style that has not been seen in this Pokemon One a Day project yet. That to me is probably the most important take away from this art.

And there you go! You have a Golbat who might just latch onto your face and never let go! But you won't mind because he's so adorable! See you tomorrow folks, and as always, thanks for reading and viewing!

Let's Look at Golbat! Pokemon One a Day!S

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
