MissingNo! Pokemon One a Day: April Fool's Edition (Title Updated)

Edit: This post came out on April Fool's Day, touting a Magmar reveal to only be a bait and switch for the now iconic and legendary pixelated glitch demon MissingNo. The new title and image header has been updated for archival sakes. Sorry if you missed out on the gag yesterday! The piece will continue as it appeared from yesterday from here on out.

Ah yes, ol' butt for brains, a creature who resembles a duck who mated with a dinosaur. I swear if it weren't for the the cheeks hanging on his forehead I think I could take ol' Magmar seriously. Other than that, he's a bipedal duck with a Charizard tail and cheesy 18 wheeler flame decal...He's a bit all over the place.

So that's why my version of Magmar is 01 01 0111 01 1.

This all clicked as I decided I had to 10 01 01001000 10 10Magmar would come to prove difficult when 0101 00 1001 0 1001010100 0 010 0 10 01 0 0 0 10 01 10 100 10 0 10111 0101 0 10 but on the other hand, Electabuzz had 10 0 10001001110 0 01000 0 0 0 0100 0 01111 00 0 0 0 0 0 1 11 010110101010101 10 01 0 10 01 01 010 010 0 1011 And then I said to him: Magmar please! lol! 010 01 10 0 01 0 01 01 0 01 01010 0 10 But it would soon prove fruitless.

0 10 01 010 10 10 010 01 Cinnabar Island, where Blaine and his Magmar 0 10 10010101 10 10 101001011 0 0110 0 10 0100001 10 101 1 1 1 1 1 00 0 0 0 0 100 010 10 010 10 01 00101010 10 10 01 010 10 0 010 10 01010101010 01 0 00 10 10 10 1 1 10 10 01 0 1010 And just so happens that the infamous 10 10 0 010 10110 10 10 01 1 on the coastline 10 10 010 10 110 01 0 0101 01 01 01 0 011 0 Using Surf 1010 1010 1001 010 10 101

MissingNo! Pokemon One a Day: April Fool's Edition (Title Updated)

The moment I defeated MissingNo, I started to tear up. To be exact, it was halfway through fighting the demented creature and abomination when I realized that I made a grave mistake. When I was a kid, Pokemon was almost everything to me. I loved playing the game, which was the only Gameboy title I had that had been gifted to me. I loved the game world, its characters, the monsters, and everything in between.

MissingNo....I wanted to see MissingNo for myself. As a kid, I had decided as soon as I was introduced to the franchise that I wanted to be a Pokemon master, whatever that meant...and if meeting MissingNo was part of the journey, then it had to be done.

I would learn that the encounter was a grave error on my behalf. MissingNo is not an actual Pokemon by any means, but the summation of that battle proved to me that it is part of my experience with the franchise and Generation 1, which is why it has been featured here today. At the conclusion of the meeting, I got what I wanted. I won. I beat the glitch and it bowed to me, granting me my prize and spoils like all the kids at school said. I would start up my game and everything would be as I left it. I was a Pokemon master, and I tamed the infamous MissingNo.

Yet, why was it that when it was time to head back into the game, my heart was racing at the thought of starting up the handheld? Confidence shifted into regret and then an anger as to why I even attempted to meet MissingNo...Were the rare candies worth it?

I remember it seemed to take an eternity to get to the game's start screen the first time I ran Gameboy after the MissingNo encounter. The system started up with the usual Gameboy logo coming on screen with the "ding!" at the end. Soon after, we had the GameFreak logo, the now iconic Gengar vs. Nidorino battle, and finally the Pokemon game screen.

I hit the start button to be invited to the only two options available that came to crush my spirit:

NEW GAME
OPTION

My heart sank and I began to cry almost instantaneously. I was always a sensitive kid, hell I'm pretty sensitive even now, but that day I felt like I lost what I felt was the world to me then. The hours and hours of adventuring, the creatures I raised to be my partners and best friends for this journey, the Dex I swore I would fill, the badges and Hall of Fame that proved of my legacy...It was all gone.

Today's illustration is a collage that represents the still vivid imagery that run through my head when I think of MissingNo. This piece is compromised of the pixels I knew all too well that were stripped from me at the cost of greed. It represents a lesson learned, and the feelings of fear, sadness, rage, regret, and defeat that MissingNo brought me that day many many years ago.

Happy April Fool's Day.

Yours,
Bonny
