The Pig Monkey Pokemon

Fighting Type

Who knew it would take this long to get to a fighting type Pokemon? Today, let's have a look at Mankey, who is apparently a...Pig Monkey? I mean, I see the pig nose and the monkey like body, but, I guess as a description goes, it does its job...Maybe? Otherwise, I think Mankey is pretty adorable, and I took a stab at illustrating him in a cartoony manner.

I decided to go with this art style because we often connect cartoons to children. Of course, that's no longer the case but stick with me for my reasoning. Mankey is pretty childish - he's got a short fuse, throws temper tantrums for the smallest of reasons, and is the first form of his evolutionary line. I wanted to emphasize his child-like nature with a more cutesy art style to soften and play up his attitude in an animated way.

Here in this depiction, he's very round with no angular lines to interrupt the outlines. I used these curves to help translate the flow of Mankey who is always jumping up and down and running and punching and kicking and doing things that Mankeys do. Unable to stay still when angry, I tackled the shadows with a warm tone, moving closer to red to symbolize rage, and went with stylistic eyes to really amp up the expression.

Personally, I think this is one of my favorite illustrations to date. I enjoy working on cartoony renditions because there's a lot of freedom given to me when it comes to creating expressions and playing with color. I think this is a stronger piece of mine in execution - I tried to use flat colors to color but found certain areas that I needed to block in over with lighter/brighter tones as it called for, and found that blending was a pain in the butt...So, I used the smudge tool in key areas and got a nice meshing of colors that I did not expect.

So there you have it folks, one Mankey throwing a hissy fit! I hope you enjoy the artwork and found the write up interesting. I have a notice in regards to this week and how Pokemon One a Day will resume with the holiday of Christmas coming up. I'm not sure what my family is planning to do in terms of celebrating - rumour has it we might be driving to visit family 3 hours away, and we might leave early tomorrow. If that's the case, there might not be art tomorrow or on Christmas day.

I'm sure you understand, and will let me off the hook in case it all goes as they're planning. Right? I mean...it could be my Christmas gift to have some wiggle room on the eve and day of Christmas! Please...!? PLEASE!!!

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
