Mr. Mime in Halloweentown?! Pokemon One a Day!

Barrier Pokemon

Psychic/Fairy Type

Necro (SF3) + Lanternfacething (Ni No Kuni) + Mr. Mime (Pokemon) +Jigsaw (Saw) x Bonny John + Tim Burton + Dr. Seuss = This Monstrosity

Y'all have seen how I've gone off on other Pokemon, and for a lot less at times...Mr. Mime takes the cake in comparison...But guess what? I'm not even gonna rant like I normally would. I had a lot of fun creating this work because Mr. Mime is such a weird creature that it held so much potential regardless of all it's quirks. I even altered the border as a first for this series to smooth in the style and tone of today's work.

However, that doesn't mean I'm gonna let it off the hook! First of all, the name - are you serious, Nintendo!? MISTER!? MISTER!? If he finishes college does his name change to Dr. Mime?

I'm not even gonna touch the fact that Mr. Mime is not a male only species as intended either. Also, a fairy type? Really!? Meanwhile Chansey be sitting in the corner looking salty. Graaahh!

OK, forget all about that suff - let's look at the art. You know me well enough by now that with designs I dislike, I try and redesign it to some capacity. This time, the redesign is merged not with my own intention to make it more interesting for its role in the Pokemon universe, but for the sake of the style being brought to the table. Today, we're looking at something Burtonesque - that is not something that fits into Burton's style developed over films per se, but uses elements seen in his sketchwork that I molded into this form you see before you today.

My obvious biggest gripe is that Mr. Mime is unnecessarily humanoid for no real reason. He can be a mime and be ambiguous in origin, such as his pre-evolution Mime Jr. (took all my energy not to lash out at that name as well...JR!? REALLY DOE!? Ahem.) but noooo...Instead, Nintendo decided to make him a freakin' human. He's got a bald patch with Danny Devito hair rising out, 5 fingers on his hands, a human face minus a nose and just the overall shape of a bipedal pedo machine. Perhaps worse with all of this is that his skin tone is a color that we can identify from our species! What the HELLL

Thus, I HAD to do something uber creepy with all that! :D

The main goal was to make it look less human. The thing about a mime however, is that the hands, arms, and legs need to be intact to actually do the miming. Where I had to get fun and creative was making his face and skin tone less humanoid. That's when I had a revelation, however - it has been downright hinted that Pokemon and Humans were one being at some point, and that manking evolved from their Pokemon ancestors. Creatures like Mr. Mime, Electabuzz, Jynx, Hitmonchan, Sawk, Throh, etc. all show these missing links in between.

Thus, I felt like keeping the human element but again and abandoning that first goal to make it less human. I decided to find a middle ground, in a creepy as all hell kind of way. The Burtonesque push could help me achieve that with oomph and style. Outside of fitting the right assets, I knew the pose I wanted needed to be lanky and obviously participate in a miming pose. Having a short stubby head/body attached to pencil thin arms and legs did the trick in delivering a deformed, grotesque monstrosity. I think this work has a unique voice to it, and the details I've thrown in really hold it up well as whole. I specifically cramped him into the box as if he were aware of the situation, too!

So, what do you guys think? I'm gonna say something that's probably not a popular opinion but whatever - I'm not the biggest Burton fan. I've enjoyed most of his movies in the past but that's besides the point. I think i'm more fearful of the fact that I don't want this work to be treated as Mr. Mime drawn by Tim Burton. I want it to be known as Bonny John's take on Mr. Mime by way of influence of the Burtonesque aesthetics. There's a difference! :)

Thanks for viewing, reading, and being awesome! See you tomorrow with every 10 year old kid's favorite Pokemon from gen 1! Good night!

Yours,

Bonny

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed.
