Pokemon One a Day: Gengar

Shadow Pokemon

Ghost/Poison

Gengar is the final evolution and last of the ghost type Pokemon in Generation 1...Let's give him a send off with today's illustration! I wanted to do something a bit different with Gengar than any of the other works I'd created so far. I wanted to utilize the composition in a major way, and interact with the frame of the work to create something exciting and new. Thus, we have a "portal" effect with Gengar, the Shadow Pokemon, phasing through time and space.

I wasn't sure if I was going to pull this off, or even if it's super effective, and my work in progress shows that. I spent the majority of today, Valentine's Day (hope you all had a nice day! I'm curling up with some Chinese take-out and Netflix) sketching out and rendering various forms of Gengar. I played with a lot of different takes of the whole phasing in and out concept. Other than, I thought of even adding darkish gradient backgrounds and also thought to do something text based, as in actual writing! I don't want to go into too much detail about that idea because it might work for a future Pokemon...whoever it may be!

So anyway, Gengar like the other two is a prankster but also has a rather devious face. Gastly was represented in a more relaxed way, Haunter was sinister, and so with Gengar I ended up going completely opposite what most of you were expecting (I assume) into something playful and almost cartoony. This pays homage to the anime where I remember him from and also adds a whimsical effect to the pose and direction of the illustration. I started off really wanting to do something sinister looking, something evil and dangerous, but I sacrificed that to create something visually different, and I think it was worth it.

Either way, that saves me the opportunity to make a Mega Gengar illustration evil and disturbing...muahahahaha!

Really, there's not much else to say other than I'm absolutely bushed after working on this piece. This illustration itself didn't take too long, but the process of trial and error was. I was wondering why I was taking longer to crank out work the last few weeks...And I guess its the threat of failing to meet the challenge and not coming up in a new or unique way of finding ways to present and illustrate the artwork. So long as I stay consistent and focus this one day at a time, I should be OK. Thanks all for reading and viewing Gengar on Pokemon One a Day! Happy Valentine's Day!

Yours,

Bonny

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.

P.S. Here's something I should have shared yesterday. It was a Pokemon fusion featuring Haunter I did a few months back. Enjoy!
