Surprise - its Psyduck! Pokemon One a Day!

The Duck Pokemon

Water Type

It's bath time! Admit it, today's illustration was not the route you were expecting! This is the first time I've kinda gone all out like this, almost creating what might sit in the frame of Psyduck Pokemon trading card!

Originally, I was going to show off Psyduck as a simple yellow rubber ducky. Nothing more, and nothing less. I had little waves of water drawn to visualize the toy was drifting along in what anyone would guess was obviously a bath tub. Pretty soon, I realized it would be a lot more entertaining and more cute to go with a nice compact visual scene featuring this take on the derpiest Pokemon we've seen in this series yet.

As I began to resize the draft of Psyduck, (to make it smaller in relation to the tub) I realized I couldn't make it too small - Psyduck is the focus after all, and I figured that rather than making the creature an inanimate object, I should just alter the appearance into a real world style duck than the bipedal original. Then again, as I write this, I wonder...If maybe making it really small and an actual toy would be even more of a subtle reference to the Pokemon as a way to really establish this illustration on a new level. D'oh!

Actually, I'm still content I went with this route. With echoes of cool tones of bluish-white making up the details of the bathroom including tiles, the curtain, the tub, water, and soapy foam and bubbles, the yellow Psyduck really pops out. To add some fun to the mix, I threw in some every day bath items to make the scene playful - courtesy of Psyduck's dormant abilities now that I made it a sentient creature and not a classic bath time toy.

I think the end result is charming and I'm happy I went with this more fully illustrated result than my original direction. This background kind of builds off of yesterday's Persian's half background, so I guess my works are evolving with the Pokemon I'm painting! I'm even more proud of this work because I had to complete this with time shaved off of my day - my power was out until 3 P.M...So I really had work hard and fast once my computer was ready. My draft had been completed up until I drew out the outline for the tub, everything else was put in between spurts in the last 4 hours.

As always, thanks for reading and viewing my work. Let me know what you think of this "extended" illustration. I'll see you tomorrow, enjoy your evening!

Surprise - its Psyduck! Pokemon One a Day!

+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
