The "Wacky" Mario Game We Never PlayedS

This isn't a screen grab from one of those Super Mario World hacks, or a fan game, or a browser flash game, or a shameless iOS / Android rip-off: it's from a real, honest-to-goodness, Nintendo-licensed Mario game that never saw the light of day.

Titled Super Mario's Wacky Worlds, the game was outsourced to developer NovaLogic for release on the Philips CD-i. It was canceled for reasons that should be obvious; NovaLogic went on to create the not-so-terrible Hotel Mario for the failed console-home entertainment-CD player thingy.

The game was about 30 percent done when the project was canned. Intended as a direct sequel to Super Mario World, the game places Mario in various settings that more closely resemble generic video game platformer tropes than the Mushroom Kingdom and its neighbors.

It doesn't look like it was too promising, but who knows. Maybe this would have been great.
