Word of the Day: Plebeian

Good evening and welcome to Word of the Day! A journey through the English vocabulary and the words that piqued my interest, in WotD we'll be learning a new word for each working day of the week, bar holidays, unless there's a holiday special...

plebeian

|pliˈbēən|

noun (in ancient Rome) a commoner.

  • A member of the lower social classes.

adjective

  • Of or belonging to the commoners of ancient Rome.
  • Of or belonging to the lower social classes.
  • Lacking in refinement : he is a man of plebeian tastes.

ORIGIN: mid 16th cent.: from Latin plebeius (from plebs, pleb- 'the common people' ) + -An .

Definitely not a new word for me, but still it's a funny word when used correctly, like when my friend wants to make fun of her younger sister, she just calls her a plebeian, even muttering it makes her face fill with rage, funny thing is... no matter what, we all are plebeians in one way or another ^^;
